Sitting in the offices of atelier oï in La Neuveville, you look out over Lake Biel, the Seeland and the Three-Lakes region all the way to the Alps, which on a clear day form an almost unreal horizon. It is from these rooms that the roughly 40 creative minds design projects in design, architecture and art for clients around the world — and are now committing to an extraordinary project right in their own region: the Attila Boutique Boatel.
«About a year ago we were asked whether we were interested in this project. Of course we are. It’s a great idea, a very interesting, atypical project», says Aurel Aebi, co-founder of atelier oï. «Something new is created out of something existing. A hotel that cruises across the three lakes with its guests. We find these aspects very interesting.»
The architects, designers and artists were always good friends of Nicolas Hayek senior and responsible for countless Swatch Group projects, but the really big work mostly happened far from the Seeland. They have realised projects in 42 countries, with huge success — stars away from home.
«Now it’s time to give something back of our good fortune. It’s certainly exciting to work for the world’s biggest brands, but it’s often a world of appearances. And the older I get, the more I feel the urge to work here, in the region. The Attila is the best example. So many people are pouring so much heart into this project. It’s simply fascinating.»
The experience on the water is at the centre of everything. Nothing should distract the guest — on the contrary, the enjoyment is only heightened by the thoughtful interior design.
«We play with light. The outside perception is reflected in the interior space. Horizons of light give the room different moods. In the evening and at night, too, you should be able to see the water, without reflections. It’s consistently indirect, differentiated light — so that you feel the space and the moods on the lake are carried into the room.»
The furnishing, too, is thought through down to the smallest detail. «The size of the cabins is limited, but the guest should lack for nothing. So we developed clever solutions for the double or single beds, the storage surfaces and the seating corners with a view of the water. Every centimetre is used to offer guests an enjoyable time.» The same philosophy — connecting the elements with the surroundings, creating a unity — also shapes the Captain’s Lounge and the ship’s outer façade.
